Royal
Oak celebrates motel demolition
By Catherine Kavanaugh Daily
Tribune Staff Writer ROYAL OAK The biggest obstacle to renewing 11
Mile Road came tumbling down Thursday when the claw of a demolition crane ate
chunk after chunk of the four-story Select Inn. City officials and residents cheered
as balconies and doorways fell to the ground, reducing the ... motel in Royal
Oak to dust and rubble. "It was a deplorable situation," Oakland
County Prosecutor David Gorcyca said. "This is a great day for the city and
this will be a great savings to the city." The new land owner, Morningside
Equities Group of Chicago, will build six stories of upscale condominiums called
SkyLofts MarketSquare at the site, adding $545,000 a year in revenue to the tax
rolls. Police Chief Ted Quisenberry said his department is pleased to have
had a hand in the redevelopment. previous
